Universal Reefers and Cape Reefers trace their history back to the early days of both carriers and shippers of Southern African fruit, initially from South Africa to Europe.

In the early days of the carriage of fruit from South African to Europe the well-known red funnels of the Union Castle Line were synonymous with the weekly sailings of cargo, passengers, and of course refrigerated fruit to European ports.

Two Union Castle vessels, in 1966, became SA Oranje and SA Vaal, forming the basis of a South African fleet that would, inter alia, cater for the carriage of Z.A. fruit. Safmarine subsequently built up a fleet of 6 reefer vessels, which Safmarines’ Universal Reefers operated, in addition to other vessels, which Universal chartered in for specific trades. Universal Reefers became a jointly owned company of Safmarine & Capespan until Safmarine was sold in 1996.

Cape Reefers based in Cape Town, South Africa, now operates all the services of Universal Reefers as a proud South African company, carrying on the traditions of the early vessels as transporters of South African fruit to world markets.
